Fish eye treatment: ointments, remedies and cryotherapy

Treatment for fisheye can be done at home with the use of ointments or solutions based on acetylsalicylic acid indicated by the dermatologist. Treatment is slow and can take more than 30 days, depending on the size of the lesion.

Other ways to treat this type of wart is through dermatological surgery such as cryotherapy, electrocautery, or the application of nitric acid or liquid nitrogen, for example.

Fisheye, also called plantar wart, is a skin disease caused by some subtypes of human papillomavirus (HPV) that can penetrate the skin when walking barefoot in places contaminated with the virus such as swimming pools, clubs, gymnastics academies, and changing rooms.

Fish eye treatment: ointments, remedies and cryotherapy

There are various treatments to remove the fisheye, these are:

1.Ointments and solutions with acids

The use of ointments or solutions with acids in their composition is the main way to treat fish eyes, and products containing salicylic, nitric, or trichloroacetic acid may be indicated. In general, the dermatologist recommends applying the ointment or solution once a day, because they promote exfoliation of the skin, removing the most superficial layer and, consequently, the wart.

The application at home of the ointment indicated by the dermatologist can be done in two steps:

Recommend excess skin:  this step is important to remove excess skin, promoting the most direct and effective action of the product indicated by the dermatologist. It is recommended to soak your feet in a bucket with warm water and a little coarse salt to soften the skin and remove all the dirt as much as possible. After the feet are properly cleaned and the skin is softer, run a pump stone over the feet to remove excess keratin from the region around the wart. It is important that this procedure does not cause pain or discomfort;

Apply the ointment or the acid solution: after removing the excess skin, the product recommended by the doctor can be applied directly to the fisheye or according to its indication, since in some cases the doctor may specifically indicate the time that you should have the product on the wart.

Some examples of ointments with salicylic acid from 5 to 40%, which the doctor may indicate are Benzac, transvercid, vaselix, verrufilm, foot vitamins, or another with a specific preparation made in the pharmacy.

It is not recommended that the person trying to pull the skin to remove the wart, because the virus can spread and give rise to new warts. In addition, there is also a risk of an infection occurring in the region, since as the skin is weaker, it can become a gateway for other microorganisms.

2. Other forms of treatment

In cases where acid treatment does not give the expected results, when the person has many warts, or when the fisheye is very deep, other dermatological treatments may be recommended to remove the wart.

One of the indicated treatments is cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, in which the wart is subjected to very low temperatures, plus or minus -200 ÂșC, which allows its freezing and elimination. This type of therapy does not usually cause pain, because the low temperatures allow pain control.

Depending on the size of the wart, 1 session may be necessary for the small ones and 3 or 4 for the larger ones.
